Full Sun: a slide film AI photoshoot in a tropical garden

Six saturated slide-film frames make up Full Sun, set in a tropical garden: deep greens, a polarized blue sky, crisp leaf shadows and one red silk scarf that never leaves the picture. Each portrait is framed through layers of banana leaves and palms on a 35 mm SLR.

About the slide film look
Clear early-afternoon sun hits from high and slightly to one side, hard and unfiltered. Leaf shadows stripe the clothes and the gravel, a bright edge catches the shoulders, and the face sits half in sun with detail kept in the shade. A circular polarizer cuts glare off the leaves and darkens the sky. The 50 mm at f/4 and 1/500 s freezes the scarf mid-flutter on fine ISO 100 slide film.
Clothes, place and when to pick it
For women, haloshot styles a cream wool-silk suit with a draped lapel and the red scarf tied at the wrist; for men, a cream camp-collar shirt and chocolate pleated trousers with the scarf knotted at the neck. Brown woven loafers finish both. Banana leaves, palms and red-flowering shrubs frame the set. It fits summer posts or a bright brand page with your own face.

How to shoot slide film portraits in hard sun
Slide film saturates hard and has little latitude, so meter for sunlit skin and let shadows go dense. A circular polarizer deepens the sky and cuts leaf glare.
- Work a botanical garden's tropical beds in early afternoon, sun high and to one side; ask about permits.
- Load Ektachrome E100 in an SLR with a 50 mm; the polarizer eats 1.5 to 2 stops, so f/4 at 1/500 s lands right.
- Frame through leaves half a meter from the lens, the subject 2 to 3 m away, the red accent always in frame.
- Turn the polarizer until the sky between palms goes deep blue and leaf shine drops.
Bracket a third of a stop each way on key frames.
