Afterparty 2004: a 2000s party aesthetic AI photoshoot

You get five snaps from a small private fashion party around 2004, taken on a compact digital camera with its flash firing straight ahead. Guests, bottles and plastic cups sit in the dark room behind, and the framing is a little off, like files found on an old memory card.

About the compact camera flash look
The built-in flash sits right beside a 35 mm-equivalent lens, so light hits the front of the face, shiny leather and cheekbones clip slightly, and anything past a few meters falls into darkness. A small sensor adds a faint green-magenta cast and deep focus. In the dancing frame the shutter stays open longer, so a lamp behind leaves warm trails while the flash keeps features sharp.
Clothes, place and when to pick it
The archive Y2K outfit works for women and men: an oversized vintage jacket, deconstructed low-rise wide trousers, a layered fitted top, a decorative belt, silver chains and narrow-frame glasses. It plays out in an apartment hallway, on a rug and in a crowded living room. Pick it for a throwback carousel, a band photo or a casual profile shot of your face mid-party.

How to get the 2000s compact camera flash look
Use a real early-2000s compact digital camera. Its tiny built-in flash, small sensor and plain processing give the harsh front light, dark backgrounds and odd color modern cameras smooth away.
- Buy a 3 to 5 megapixel CCD compact from around 2004, with spare batteries and a matching memory card.
- Host a real party in a lived-in apartment: friends, bottles, plastic cups, table lamps on and ceiling lights off.
- Leave the flash on auto at the 35 mm-equivalent wide end and shoot from one to two meters.
- For dancing shots, switch to night mode so the slow shutter adds lamp trails behind the flash.
Keep the camera's default color; correcting the green-magenta cast later strips out the period feel.
