About the smoke flare look
The flare is the key light and sits in the frame, held high or low. It throws deep red onto part of the face and coat while its smoke catches the same color and drifts across the scene. Behind the subject, the afterglow rims hair, beard and shoulders. A 35 mm lens at f/2.8 keeps the sky soft and lets sparks show near the hand.
