Corner Store: a half-frame camera AI photoshoot

Corner Store is shot on a half-frame camera, so each of its six vertical street frames uses half a 35 mm negative and carries heavier grain. A small corner grocery, a bus shelter and parked bicycles set the scene under a flat gray sky.

About the half-frame camera look
Overcast light falls evenly from the sky, a little stronger from above and from the open end of the street. Faces and fabric get gentle modeling with soft-edged shadows, damp asphalt carries a dull sheen, and the shop window glows faintly warm. The 28 mm lens, close to 40 mm on full frame, is zone-focused at three meters and set to f/8 and 1/125 s, so a passing cyclist smears while the person stays sharp.
Clothes, place and when to pick it
haloshot styles women in an oversized gray hoodie under a cropped olive canvas jacket with wide jeans and a big tote, and men in the same jacket and hoodie with frayed jeans and a wooden skateboard. A charcoal beanie and gray suede skate shoes go with both. Low brick houses line the street. Pick it for an everyday series with your own face.

How to shoot street portraits on a half-frame camera
A half-frame camera exposes 18 × 24 mm, half a normal 35 mm frame. Held level it shoots verticals, doubles the shots per roll and enlarges the grain.
- Work a residential street with a corner shop on a gray day; ask the owner before using the doorway.
- Load ISO 400 color negative in a half-frame body with a 28 mm, about 40 mm full-frame, at f/8 and 1/125 s.
- Zone-focus at 3 m and keep the subject near that distance so focusing never slows you.
- Let them loiter, pass the window or sit on the curb, and shoot between movements.
Ask the lab to scan half-frame rolls as single frames; many default to pairs.
