Cloister: a foggy old-town AI photoshoot at dawn

A woman with long blond hair in a hooded graphite cloak stands by a stone column, cloister arches fading into fog behind

You get a dawn walk through an old cathedral quarter in dense fog, with a hooded figure as the darkest shape in every frame. Arcades, steps and a bell tower fade toward white in three or four soft steps behind.

Five frames and one detail, made by haloshot from three phone photos of one person.

About the natural fog look

Fog does the lighting: flat, cold gray from every side with a slight lift from above, soft black shadow inside the hood and nothing with a hard edge. A 70 mm at f/4 from four to twelve meters compresses the arches a little and keeps the nearest stone crisp. At 1/250 s the figure is still and sharp, and fine grain sits over the gradients.

Clothes, place and when to pick it

Women get a graphite cloak-coat with a deep hood over a boiled-wool tunic and pleated skirt; men get a hooded wool-cashmere coat over a rib knit and wide trousers, both in matte black boots. Locations are cloister arcades, wide steps and a bell tower. Pick it for a book cover, a winter post or a quiet portrait with your own face inside the hood.

How it works

How to photograph a portrait in natural fog

Real fog is a forecast problem more than a lighting one. Radiation fog forms after still, clear nights and usually burns off within two hours of sunrise.

  1. Choose an old valley town, track dew point against air temperature, and keep standby dates on the permit.
  2. Arrive before dawn and block shots so an arch, column or tower edge sits behind the model.
  3. Shoot the 70 mm at f/4, 1/250 s from 4 to 12 m, adding about a stop so fog stays pale.
  4. Keep the model near the closest stone, which stays crisp while every plane behind fades.

A fog machine covers one short lane at best; a whole town needs the weather.
